Get Your Dog Chipped – DSPCA for 5 Euro
The Dublin SPCA will be offering microchipping at a discounted price of EUR5 per dog over the next few weekends when the Mobile Information Unit visits Superquinn stores.
Please note, they can only microchip dogs at the Mobile Unit and they must accompanied by their owner. Dogs MUST be on a lead, and owners must be over the age of 16. Microchipping will be on a first come first serve basis only.
What is Microchipping:
The DSPCA recommends a microchip as an effective way of permanently linking pets to their owners, increasing the chances of them being reunited if the animal is lost, stolen or strayed. Thousands of pets are lost every year and many are never reunited with their owners and it is the hope of the Dublin SPCA that eventually all pet dogs and cats in Dublin City & County will be micro-chipped.
Micro-chipping is done by painlessly inserting a small microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, under the animals skin. Once in, the microchip cannot move or be seen but can be read by a special scanner. Each chip is encoded with a specific code number unique to the pet which is registered in a special database along with details of its breed, sex and most importantly, the owners name, address and telephone numbers.
Once an animal has been micro-chipped it has its own unique code number. The owners details and the code are put on to the national PetTrace database, which is maintained by the DSPCA. If a lost, stolen or injured animal is found, passing the special scanner over the microchip will reveal the code. Then its just a matter of matching the code with the PetTrace database and reuniting the animal with its owner.
By law, all dogs have to wear a collar with a tag showing its owners name and address, but collars can break; identification tags fall off and get lost. Microchips identify your pet permanently and harmlessly.
The PetTrace database on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For more information contact the shelter on 493 5502/4.
