Irish ‘Rules of the Road’ Updated After 12 Years!

A new Rules of the Road Book, which was published yesterday, has been long overdue. Its a full 12 years since the last revision!. In that time there has been the introduction of the Penatly Point System, the changeover to Kilometres from miles and a host of new rules & regulations across all vehicle types.

It is any wonder that our road deaths are so high when many of the rules of the road have been effectively kept a secret from those who most need to know them. The 50% failure rate in the driving test can someway be attributed to the fact that there is no single source of the relevant information available to either instructors or those taking the test.

The new edition of the book, which has been expanded from 68 pages to 288 pages, includes new sections on road rage, the penalty point system and metric speed limits.

The rules will be published in English and Irish while there are plans to also make them available in Polish, Mandarin Chinese and Russian.

And the most sensible decision of all is that a copy of the updated Rules of the Road is to be sent to every home in the country free of charge. Damn right!
