Emtec have launched the Movie Cube-R claiming it offers all the main functionality of the video recorder, DVD player and hi-fi system in one portable unit. The Cube, designed in a brushed aluminium case is really just a high capacity hard drive with added bells and whistles. Hook it up for recording and time-shift recording from a TV or set-top box in whatever quality you like, including HD, then playback via the remote or the controls on the front.

You can store a variety of formats, including (MPEG1/2/4, AVI and XVID), connecting to a screen via Component or standard composite video connection. There’s USB connectivity and the usual card reader for adding files from other devices, including photos in JPEG, JPG and BMP file formats. Capacities will range from 160GB to 500GB, with prices starting at €200, should be on the market during September.
