USB, is set to get a 10x speed bump next year when v3 goes live. The big news is optical: while completely backward compatible, the USB 3.0 standard will incorporate fiber alongside the copper to boost speeds to what we guess is 4.8 gigabits per second (10 x 480 Mbps), which makes it a viable option for networking, and even connecting monitors.Intel has hooked up with HP, Microsoft, NEC, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments to form the USB 3.0 Promoter Group, a non-profit with the aim of pushing the new standard.
