The Irish Digital TV Fiasco Goes On!
So as most may know and some may not, Boxer DTT pulled out of providing a digital TV service for Ireland late last month. Boxer had won the contract last year to provide the service throughout ireland. The company blamed the economic downturn(who isnt these days!) and “challenges” in reaching a deal on transmission facilities with RTE Networks for its decision. Last November, Boxer was given a key contract from RTE’s networks division, which is responsible for building the infrastructure for Boxer as well as RTE’s own public service DTT.
The Government’s and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland(BCI) plans for DTT roll out through three commercial multiplexes, which will transmit about 30 channels of digital TV through existing aerials, supported by set-top boxes. Current analogue TV signals are expected to be phased out in 2012 completely.
The BCI said it would now ask the second place applicant in last year’s competition, One Vision, whether it was interested in negotiating on the contracts. One Vision includes TV3, Setanta and Eircom. It is understood that representatives of OneVision are planning to meet with the BCI to initiate the negotiations in the next week.
We wait………….
